The Deadliest Sin

After I had gone to Padre Miguel’s confessional and he had agreed to speak to Hermana Teresa, each hour of waiting was a month, each day a year. Finally Padre Miguel arrived at the monasterio. Fray Ignacio looked at him suspiciously, no doubt because he was a visitor of mine. When we were alone, Padre Miguel told me, “She has agreed to write you a letter. She says she will leave it in the usual place tonight.” He had no idea about the hollow in the olive tree, but he knew that I would understand.

I climbed one final time over the monastery wall as the sun was setting, and “borrowed” a horse. The night was cold but I rode feverishly, crouched up on the saddle, too eager to sit. The horse and I were both covered with sweat. I slowed down only when I arrived at the convent wall. As I dismounted, my steed snorted. I tried to calm him with pats of my hand and the soothing sounds of my voice. I pushed open the secret door, its wood rotten and the lock still broken. Her letter was in the hollow of the tree that still held all of mine. By the light of the full moon, I began to read her note, my heart beating ever faster.

I have tried to forget you. I have tried to cleanse my anguished soul of my body’s sinfulness, but I could not. I have broken my vows and defiled my body. The Inquisitor will come to punish my sin if I do not punish myself.
